OUR STORY
Thirty-five years after leaving the family farm, John Cline, Jr. came back to make the once-flourishing property successful again. After his father died, Cline returned to revitalize the home place. “My dad would be shocked to think that I am now a fifth-generation farmer,” Cline said. Cline’s Nursery is a North Carolina Century Farm, having been owned continuously by the Cline family for over 100 years.
Cline’s ancestors started the farm in 1857 and Cline wants to pass it on to his two sons, who have also said they want to keep it. The house was built in 1925 and the property also includes a granary, which is being used in the nursery operation, along with a barn and corncrib that were renovated with old wood and windows that were recovered and reused on the property. A two-room schoolhouse from 1898 was torn down and the building materials were recovered in the process. The Cline’s took the wood and recycled it to see if they could get another hundred years out of it. They’ve returned most everything back to how it was in the 1920’s. They plan to keep it as original as possible, adding just a little freshness to it.

GARDEN CENTER
Our garden center in Shelby, NC specializes in supplies for your vegetable garden, planters, flower beds, lawn, and patio. Master Gardeners will appreciate our advanced gardeners’ supply sections, with an excellent array of garden pots and containers. Those interested in native plants will be happy with our selection. Browse our breathtaking selection of garden and landscaping plants, and our specialty, Japanese Maple trees. If you have a condo or apartment, we love to help bring life into your space with exotic houseplants and expert tips to creating balcony-friendly patio designs.
JAPANESE MAPLE SPECIALIST
Because there wasn’t enough land to run a full-fledged farm on the 2-acre spread, Cline decided to turn the place into a nursery that now specializes in Japanese Maples. Over 100 different cultivars, from tall to short, broad- to lacy-leafed and colors that go from green to bronze-brown, grow at the nursery.
WHOLESALE NURSERY
We are a Wholesale Nursery that serves commercial customers both big and small, including Landscape Contractors, Designers, Landscape Architects, Home Builders, Garden Centers, and Professional Gardeners. We are a one stop shop offering needles, mulch, stone, straw, fertilizer, bagged soil, and grass seed along with shrubs, groundcovers, grasses, perennials, and trees from 4” containers to large B&B trees. We offer beautiful locally grown plants and trees as well as a large variety of items sourced from around the United States, and we are happy to locate any plant material you need.
